Teaching a new thing to your kid is not a difficult task. Usually, kids are very responsive and they learn things faster than adults. But to make them teach something, you have to make it fun and interesting so that they will show interest in your activities. This principle is also applicable to basketball. Kids like to play basketball. The teaching process of the Basketball drills for kids needs to be easy and innovative and inspiring. The success of the learning mostly depends on the teaching process of the coach.
The first thing you should do to teach the basketball drills to kids is to start with the fundamentals. If they will be able to understand the fundamentals then they can learn other things in less time. Without knowing the fundamentals, they will find it difficult to learn difficult techniques. Hence, always start with the fundamentals.
Start with fundamentals
Teach them the proper standing position, right stance in starts, stops, and jumps. If they will teach these basic things they will be able to give a better performance during the game. And these techniques will allow the little players to create muscle memory for proper stance, and push them to go quickly and correctly on the court.
This drill teaches the players to identify fundamental stances, and position their bodies to presume those stances and helps them to learn to maintain those stances.
For this drill, the players need to be spread out on the court. The coach will yell out the fundamental postures that players have learned during the practice session. After hearing the call of the coach, the players should immediately take the position and hold it until the coach has confirmed they all are in the right position. The coach should use different types of the calls to give the little players a proper understanding of the stances and to make their postures accurate and to make them respond quickly to every call.
Stance mirror is something that helps the players to recognize their mistakes and to overcome it by proper posture. By the stance mirror, the player will be able to watch the standing position and movements and will find out the mistakes that he is doing during the process. This is the best way to make the player conscious about the mistakes and to help him to correct accordingly.
For this purpose, you can simply use a mirror or a partner; the partner can act as your mirror to show your movements. It will be better if you will arrange a mirror so that you will be able to recognize the mistakes on your own.
How to help them from start to end during the drill
The basketball drill increases the kid’s ability to start, turn, and stop quickly and correctly. Hence, to teach all these things you need to divide them into groups. That will make the learning easy and quick.
For starting this procedure, divide the kids into four groups and make them stand at one end of the court. Once they are ready for the position, the coach should call out the stance positions and options, the players should follow the calls immediately. Some of the known stances of the basketball are given below.
1. Stutter-steps: This is the starting step. Here the kids move from the baseline to the other end line with their hands up, making their shoes squeal and with the use of the floor.
2. Change-of-pace moves: Once it is done and they reach at the another end of the baseline, the coach immediately calls for slow and fast moves, with the use of a varied number of movements and steps to make the players acquainted with all the variations so that they will not be acquainted with any basic pattern.
3. Turn: Then the players will practice some front and rear turns with the use of different Stride stop variations under the guidance of the coach.
4. Split-vision run: Players run across the court. While doing this running, their eyes should concentrate on the basket and during the entire session their main focus should be the basket.
5. Abrupt stop: While running, kids make abrupt stops at the free throw line, the opposite free throw line and at the half court line.
By going through these five steps, the kids will be acquainted with the procedures of the court and will learn how to focus on the basket while performing other activities in the court.
How to make Jumps
Once kids got the idea of how to manage and perform in the court, the next thing they should know is how to make a proper jump. The coach will teach the kids different jumping skills and positions for jump ball situations.
For teaching the jumping skills and making the practice, the coach just needs to divide the kids into different groups and make them from jumping circles. The coach or one player will be allowed to throw the ball in the air and other two players will practice jumping with different jumping skills to tip the ball. And this practice should be done with every player to make them learn the basic jumping skills.
After teaching them the basics, the coach can teach them some other skills such as fingertips, ball slaps, and defensive stance.
How to make the learning easy for kids
As mentioned above, the teaching process should be fun, interesting, and easy so that kids will find it inspiring and enjoyable. If the coach is strict, the process will be difficult and time-consuming. You can follow some simple procedures to make it easy and interesting. You can show some basketball videos to the young students and they will find it interesting and will try to do it on their own. The second thing is that do not point out their mistakes every time. Try to guide them by some other methods. If you will try to improve all the mistakes at one time it will only discourage the young player to learn new things. Give them time to understand the game and make the procedure slow and steady.
